About me
Norbert Munkel is a veteran of the database and enterprise IT ecosystem with a career spanning nearly four decades. Currently a Senior Consultant and Specialist for Db2 (LUW), Python, and Ansible at x1F MTS GmbH he is a recognized speaker and regular contributor to the International Db2 Users Group (IDUG) conferences.
Norbert’s professional journey began in 1988 as a working student at the Gesellschaft für Reaktorsicherheit (german nuclear safety agency), where he worked on the world-leading accident simulator RACAL using Fortran on OS/390. Despite completing a degree in Administrative Science in 1994, he made the bold decision to leave a lifetime civil service tenure to pursue open-source technology. This led him to SUSE (1999–2001), where besides holding other positions he served as Project Manager for the first Linux on zSeries hardware, helping create the blueprint for all modern commercial Linux distributions.
During his career, Norbert served as Database Team Lead at the BPO startup acoreus AG. Operating in an environment with restricted technical resources, he mastered the art of Db2 performance optimization, a skill that continues to define his efficient architectural designs. From 2008 to 2011, he further expanded his expertise at ORDIX AG, serving as both a consultant and a trainer for Db2 and Linux/Unix (Solaris, AIX) system programming (including shell, awk, sed, and Perl).
Today, Norbert leverages this extensive background to build high-performance automation frameworks that integrate Db2into DevOps pipelines using Python and Ansible. His work focuses on extending Ansible’s capabilities through custom filter, action, and lookup plugins to handle complex database configurations in large-scale enterprise environments
