Tim Vermeulen started his career where many Db2 problems are first observed: as a mainframe operator, watching production at 3 a.m. and wondering who scheduled that job. From there, he grew into an application DBA, then a Db2 for z/OS system DBA - a role he still actively performs today - while officially carrying the title of Principal Tech Lead Mainframe & Foundations at SD Worx.
With over 20 years of experience, Tim has seen Db2 from every angle: console messages, bad access paths, forgot-the-where-clause, connection floods, and the occasional “we didn’t change anything” incident. Today, his work is an equal mix of keeping Db2 systems and related software running, tuning them under real‑world workload pressure, and modernizing them to stay relevant and future‑proof. That usually happens while working closely with modern .NET applications and developers who assume connections are infinite, transactions are optional, and retries will save the day. He’s still wondering how something this reliable gets blamed so quickly and why it’s always “the database”.
