This session presents a comprehensive approach to database backup and recovery using Snapshot Backup technology integrated with Cloud infrastructure. The solution leverages the Db2 ACS Scripted interface to automate backup operations on Linux systems, enabling efficient data protection strategies for enterprise databases.
The implementation utilizes Linux LVM (Logical Volume Manager) to create consistent point-in-time snapshots of database volumes, ensuring data integrity during backup operations.
By combining snapshot-based backup techniques with cloud object storage capabilities, this approach delivers a robust disaster recovery solution that minimizes backup windows, reduces storage costs, and enhances data availability. The scripted automation through Db2 ACS interface ensures consistent, repeatable backup procedures while maintaining operational efficiency in Linux environments.

Db2 upgrades can look straightforward in your favourite manual, but real-world environments often tell a different story. In this session, we share practical user experiences and lessons learned from two recent Db2 upgrade projects that we undertook – moving from Db2 v11.1 to v11.5 on Windows, and from Db2 v11.5 to v12.1.3 on Linux. These upgrades involved very different setups, including single versus multiple instances, standalone databases versus HADR clusters, and the contrasting challenges between Windows and Linux platforms. We will walk through the expected and unexpected issues we encountered, highlight pitfalls not clearly documented in the manuals, and explain the workarounds and strategies that allowed us to complete the upgrades successfully.

There are several flavors of compression in Db2 for z/OS.
You can reduce the space required for a table by using data compression. Compressing the data in a table space can significantly reduce the amount of disk space that is needed to store data and can help improve buffer pool performance.
You can also compress your indexes to significantly reduce the physical space requirements for most indexes.
You can also reduce the size of data in a LOB table space to ensure that the LOB table space and its associated base table space remain available for inserting data.
In this presentation you will learn the different algorithms used for compression in Db2, comparing the cost and benefit of each of them. You will learn how to measure the effect of compression, the space savings but also the effect on applications and utility processing and of course the recent changes in the latest versions and function levels of Db2 for z/OS.

This presentation explains how DB2 uses workfiles for a range of purposes, including SORT, scrollable cursors, and temporary tables. It also describes how workfile allocation and usage behave both before and after the enhancements introduced in V13 FL508. Finally, it reviews the workfile monitoring capabilities available today, with particular emphasis on the enhancements introduced over the past decade and how they can be leveraged to identify tuning opportunities.

In this session we will demonstrate how data can be utilized to gain valuable insights into system performance and optimization. We will provide an introduction of the newest and greatest capabilities in visualizing performance data for an easy step in, which can lead to significant performance improvements.
The objective of this session is to demonstrate some real-world examples mainly out of Db2 and WLM and how visualizing performance data helped the Performance Teams diagnose performance issues, better perform capacity planning and how attendees can learn easily more about their z/OS /CICS /Db2 environment.

Many users and applications make only use of Db2 as a relational database. But Db2 is much more than just a relational database. Db2 support the efficient processing of JSON and XML data, allows queries on spatial data, and supports text search and even semantic searches. This presentation gives an overview of these "non-relational" features of Db2, and demonstrates how these features can be used and combined to implement various use cases.

SQL performance tuning is a core DBA skill, yet many efforts remain reactive and inconsistent. This session presents a practical, end-to-end tuning workflow for Db2 for z/OS from identifying problem SQL to validating improvements. Attendees will walk through real tuning decisions using metrics, access path analysis, and supporting tools to achieve measurable performance gains.
